Definitions of Special Education Terms
IEP - Individual Education Program - This is a legal document detailing the special education services a disabled student will receive, and documentation of the goals, objectives, and accommodations recommended for that student to make effective progress.
Consultative Services - Collaboration and discussion among professionals on behalf of a student that does not directly involve the student. Consultative Services are listed on the Service Delivery page of the IEP in the top (part A) section.
Inclusion Services - Services provided to a student within the general education classroom. Inclusion Services are listed on the Service Delivery page of the IEP in the middle (part B) section.
Pull-out Services - Services provided to a student outside of the general education classroom.
Pull-out Services are listed on the Service Delivery page of the IEP in the bottom (part C) section.
Inclusion - Students with disabilities have the right to be educated in their home community and to be included with children who do not have disabilities to the extent necessary for them to make effective progress.
Effective Progress - Documented growth in the acquisition of knowledge and skills, including social/emotional development, within the general education program, with or without accommodations, according to the chronological age and developmental expectations, the individual educational potential of the child, and the learning standards set forth in the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks and the curricula of the Hingham Public Schools.
FAPE - Free and Appropriate Public Education - All students have the right to receive a free public education that is appropriate to their ability to make effective progress.
Least Restrictive Setting - The setting that is the closest to the general education setting with typical peers necessary for a student to make effective progress.
Accommodations - Teaching supports and/or changes to how a student is expected to learn or how he or she is tested. Accommodations should not change grade level curriculum expectations.
Modifications - Changes made to curriculum expectations in order to meet the needs of the student. Modifications are made when the expectations are beyond the students level of ability. Modifications may be minimal or very complex depending on the student performance and will be documented in the IEP.
Paraprofessional/Paraeducator - Often referred to as an aide, a paraprofessional is a special-education worker who is usually not licensed to teach, but who performs many duties both individually with students and organizationally in the classroom. These duties are under the direction of the classroom teacher and special education teacher. Paraprofessionals do not assign grades, attend parent/teacher conferences or participate in IEP meetings.
Related Services - Services provided by an Occupational Therapist, Physical Therapist or Speech & Language Pathologist.
